Tobago Underwater Carnival 2012
Published: 01/06/2012
Discover Tobago’s beautiful and
diverse marine life during the
island’s third underwater carnival.
The Association of Tobago Dive Operators
(ATDO) in conjunction with the Tobago House
of Assembly’s Tourism Division is hosting the
event during 22nd to 29th July 2012.
The nutrient rich waters around Tobago are
a haven for fish, turtles, shark and ray, offering
some of the best diving in the Caribbean. It is
also home to one of the largest brain corals in
the world.
This year’s underwater carnival will
feature events for divers of all levels. Key
events include presentations by underwater
photographer Ty Sawyer, cinematographer
Peter Kragh and David Jones of the Plastic
Ocean Foundation.
There will also be an underwater photo
competition to take a picture of all six
species of angelfish found in Tobago, a basic
beach rescue and first aid workshop, as
well as opening and closing ceremonies and
promotions.
For non-divers who would like to know more, a try dive event will be hosted
by the YMCA in Tobago where children and adults can experience scuba
diving for the first time with qualified professional instructors. There will also
be a display by equipment manufacturers.
Registration for the Tobago Underwater Carnival 2012 costs just $75US,
giving participants access to the opening and closing parties, a gift bag, all
seminars, special rate diving, discounts at select bars and restaurants and
select land-based tours, free snorkeling equipment rental and transfers to and
from hotels and venues. International visitors also receive a free return ticket
between Trinidad and Tobago and for persons wishing to participate from
Europe a two hundred pound return airfare.
President of ATDO, Alice Darwent, says, “We would like to thank all our
sponsors for showing their commitment to diving in Tobago. The island
is beautiful both above and below the water. The carnival will showcase
Tobago’s rich and diverse underwater eco-system and one-of-a-kind aquatic
treasures, including a multitude of colourful reefs and marine creatures. It has
something for everyone from expert divers to novices. Come to our island and
discover the amazing underwater world which awaits.”
