REVIEW OF THE 2012 TRINIDAD CARNIVAL
REGATTA February 10th to 12th 2012 The second edition of the Trinidad and
Tobago Sailing Association (TTSA)
Trinidad Carnival Regatta was held at
Hart’s Cut, Chaguaramas. This event
is the TTSA’s flagship racing event for the 2012
season and replaces the very well-known Tobago
Angostura Regatta in the sailing calendar.
It was held over three days Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. There were 20 local boats participating
with one entry from Grenada. These were divided
into four classes, Racing, Racer-Cruiser, Cruising
and One Design.
The competitors in the Trinidad Carnival Regatta
faced wildly varying conditions over the three days,
with the first day being sailed in a very light, 3-5 knts,
Westerly wind and then on Saturday, the second day,
very strong, 14-16 knts, Easterly winds and finally on
Sunday, after a long delay a steady North Westerly
wind of 7-9 knts.
The rivalry in the Racing Class was particularly
intense and in the end the points leader ‘C-Mos’,
skippered by Norman Da Costa was penalized for an
infraction in the second to last race, which resulted
in her slipping to second place over-all. This class
was won by ‘Jaguar’, skippered by Peter Morris and
in third place was ‘Legacy’, skippered by Association
President Reginald Williams.
In the Racer-Cruiser Class, the perennial favorite
‘Nirvana’, skippered by Lloyd De Roche was
dethroned by a well sailed ‘Dingolay’, skippered
by Mark Chapman and third over-all was ‘Sea
Wfy’, skippered by Kevin Kenny. In the Cruising
Class, ‘Andiamo’, skippered by Jay Alvi was the
undisputed winner with five first place finishes in
five races sailed.
In the One Design Class, it was ‘Jahaji Bhai’,
skippered by James Arrindell showing top form
to top this class, with ‘Die-Hard’ from Grenada,
skippered by Robbie Yearwood in second and
‘Ambushe’, skippered by Stephen Bushe coming in
third.
The event was brought to a close with Sunday
evening’s prize giving ceremony presided over
by the Association’s President Reginald Williams.
